Straatkunst in Suriname
Beginning in the 1970s, a surprising form of informal painting developed in Surinam, particularly in the capital Paramaribo. Paintings of ever-increasing exuberance were appearing on private 'wild buses' and shave-ice carts. At the same time a similar growth was experienced among commercial painters. In 2010, these forms of street art are flourishing as never before. Hundreds of buses go to make up a moving exhibition filled with Afro-American musicians and Bollywood film stars, trains, trumpets and texts in decorative scripts. Shave-ice carts form colourful three-dimensional art works in the street environment, and whole buildings are covered in hyperrealistic commercial paintings. In this book the history of Surinamese street art is reconstructed and its most important practitioners are presented. But above all Schaafijs en wilde bussen leaves an overwhelming visual impression of this little-known artistic explosion
